Trump ‘looking forward to’ talk to Mueller in Russia probe
US President Donald Trump says he is willing to talk to Special Counsel Robert Mueller “under oath,” denying any collusion with Russia in the wake of his 2016 victory.
“I am looking forward to it, actually,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday, when asked if he was going to talk to Mueller, who is tasked with investigating Moscow’s alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
An investigation has been launched to find out whether the Russian government coordinated with Trump’s aides after the intelligence community’s conclusion that the Kremlin helped with the New York billionaire’s campaign effort ahead of winning the White House, an allegation dismissed both by Moscow and the president.
“Here is the story: There has been no collusion whatsoever. There is no obstruction whatsoever. And I am looking forward to it,” Trump said.
He further asserted that he has just been making attempts to “fight back” against the investigation.
“Now they’re saying, ‘Oh, well, did he fight back?’ ” Trump said. “You fight back, ‘Oh, it’s obstruction.’ ”
Later he even went as far as saying he would do it under oath, reversing previous suggestions that he would not attend an interview with Mueller, a former FBI director.
“I would do it under oath. I would do it,” he said. “I would do it under oath, yeah.”
In January, the Republican president undermined a possible interview by questioning evidence of collusion in the probe.
“I’ll see what happens. But when they have no collusion — and nobody has found any collusion at any level — it seems unlikely that you would even have an interview,” Trump said at news conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg.
