GCE 2017: Biya Francophone government announces the creation of 432 “safe centers”
The Biya Francophone government has announced that “safe centers” have been created for some 134 thousand candidates taken part in the written phase of the General Certificate of Examinations nationwide amid a massive civil disobedience campaign orchestrated by the Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium.
State radio and television reported that 432 accommodation centers were currently hosting candidates for both the Ordinary and Advanced level under very tide security. A representative of the GCE Board was quoted as saying that in Bamenda, candidates for the Baccalaureate were grouped in three accommodation centers and security officers deployed to protect the buildings. Some Francophone parents were seen accompanying their children to the examinations halls.
Cameroon Intelligence Report understands several registered candidates from all the 13 counties in Southern Cameroons were sitting for the exams in French Cameroun for fear of attacks. Cameroon Radio and Television focused its coverage of the political GCE only in the Center region.
