Eseka train accident: Death toll reaches 55
Cameroon Intelligence Report can now confirm that the Intercity train that derailed en route to Douala from Yaounde has claimed the lives of 55 Cameroonian citizens including women and children. Our source also revealed that some 555 people were seriously wounded and traumatized and the death toll is expected to rise.
The accident occurred today at Eseka and was reported to the international media by Camrail, the subsidiary of Bolloré Logistics & Transport, responsible for the management of the railway sector in Cameroon.
Earlier, Cameroon was hit by the collapse of a bridge on the Yaounde-Douala highway some 65 km from Yaoundé. Many passengers were advised by the ministry of transport to use train services from Yaoundé to Douala.
Camrail added 8 coaches to the Intercity services to Douala to enhance the movement of the many users. We gathered that the locomotive engine capacity was not powered to pull 8 new additional coaches.
