Dibussi Tande’s “Ode to a Barrister Agbor Balla”
Dibussi Tande, a poet and writer, who owns Scribbles from the Den wrote a poem in honour of Barrister Agbor Felix Nkongho, the Chairman of the Cameroon Anglophone Civil Consortium on January 31, 2017 while he was in jail. The stanzas holds true inspiration, motivation and words that emboldened the soul of leader of the Consortium. Below are the words as scripted by the Great Dibussi Tande
They have you behind bars, But you’re as free as a bird!
I remember those Afghanistan days
When I would open social media with dread
Hoping not to be slapped by news that
A Taliban operative or an Al-Qaeda
Suicide bomber had gotten you
Somewhere in that forsaken land
What a relief when you left
Then utter despair
When you returned for a second stint
When you finally made it back to
The lair of Efas’a Moto we knew
That chapter was over
And that you were finally safe
From a car bomb
Or a crazy Mujahedeen
Today, as they keep you locked up
In some flea infested cell
As they try to break your spirit
With spurious charges of
Terrorism and treason – an accusation that best fits Them for they have destroyed
The dream of a prosperous, bilingual
Cameroon, the pride of Africa —
As they try and intimidate you
With careless talk of death
As they hold you hostage on
The other side of the river,
I can only look at it all with contempt
This is not Afghanistan
They are not the Mujaheedin!
So, I don’t toss and turn at night
Not because I am in denial of what’s in store –the Verdict is in already and the
Rest will just be for show –
But because I know
They can break your body
But they cannot kill your spirit
They can lock up your flesh
But they can’t chain your soul
They have you behind bars
But you’re as free as a bird
Whatever they do
I know that someday down the road
We shall all gather somewhere on
The west bank of the river mungo
Somewhere on the foot of the mighty Fako Mountain
To laugh at the stupidity of your jailers
Who failed to realize that
Prison is where character is forged
Where great ideas a born
Where imagination is set free to dream
Of a better tomorrow for one’s people.
Hold tight big man!!
We shall rise again
As we watch them languish in pools of
Regrets and utter despair
