Cameroon sink Zambia in Afcon warm-up
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed appeals from the Comoros Football Federation (FFC) over Cameroon’s involvement in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Comoros lodged the complaint after the Indomitable Lions were retained in the continental showpiece even though they’d been stripped of the hosting rights by Caf.
In their first appeal on January 28, they claimed the continent’s governing body hadn’t enforced the law regarding the Central African nation’s failure to exercise their hosting rights.
On February 11, the FFC appealed to CAS against Caf’s decision to allow the Cameroonian side to participate at the Nations Cup and award them the hosting rights for 2021.
However, after the hearing with the involved parties on May 29, a CAS panel have concluded that the appeals are inadmissible.
The panel also established that the FFC had no sporting interest in pursuing the matter, given Comoros had no mathematical chance of qualifying for the biennial showpiece even if Cameroon were thrown out.
Furthermore, the Comoros federation’s request to have the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) suspended was dismissed as there was insufficient legal interest in pursuing the case.
Further reasons for CAS’ decision will be revealed in due course.
Clarence Seedorf’s side were initially meant to feature in the competition as hosts, but had to navigate the qualifying rounds after Egypt were made the hosts in January.
They finished second in Group B behind Morocco, while third-placed Malawi and fourth-placed Comoros missed out on qualification for the continental showpiece.
The defending champions begin their title defence in Group F against Guinea-Bissau at Ismailia Stadium on June 25, before facing off with four-time champions Ghana on June 29, with their final group encounter coming against Benin on July 2.

Guinea’s national under-17 male football team on Sunday lost 3-5 after penalty kicks to their Cameroonian counterparts in a pulsating final match at the Africa Under-17 Nations Cup competition.
In the final match played at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania both sides drew goalless after 90 minutes of intense action.
Both sides failed to score any goal for the game to go on to penalty kicks directly.
They scored their first five kicks each for an advance into the sudden death shots.
It continued as a ding-dong affair, with both sides scoring, until Guinea’s Mohamed Youssouf Sacko missed the fourth kick.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the result means Cameroon takes the AFCON U-17 Cup, while Guinea finished second.
Third place has gone to Angola who, on Saturday, beat Nigeria 2-1 at the same venue in the third-place match.
All four teams have advanced to the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup billed for later in the year in Brazil.

Cameroon had to come from behind to beat Morocco 2-1 at the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Tanzania to clinch a place at the World Cup.
Their second win of the tournament means Cameroon progress to the semi-finals of the tournament with a game to spare.
In their opening match on Monday Cameroon beat Guinea 2-0.
All four semi-finalists from Tanzania also earn a place at the World Cup in Brazil later this year.
Morocco took the lead in the 22nd minute through Tawfik Bentayeb after a slip in the Cameroonian defence on wet surface.
Ismaila Seidou equalised in the 73rd minute as his shot from a narrow angle eluded the keeper who seemed to dive the wrong way
Another defensive error handed Seidou the winner in injury time as he rounded the goalkeeper after dispossessing captain Achraf Ramzi, who was trying to dribble out of the penalty area.
It will be only Cameroon’s second appearance at the Under-17 World after their debut in 2003 in Finland, when three draws was not enough to see them progress from the group phase.

2017 Africa Cup of Nations champions, Cameroon have unveiled new kit ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
The unveiling was done in Yaoundé as the team continued its preparations for the biennial tournament.
The team maintained its fitted and round neck style which is known for in the past but the dark green of the body became lighter a little bit.
The Indomitable Lions has been placed alongside four times AFCON winners Ghana, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.
Despite the country being stripped of the hosting right of the competition, they will still have the opportunity to defend the trophy they won two years ago.
Cameroon remains one of the most successful teams in the history of the AFCON, having won it five times with only the seven-time winners Egypt having bettered their record.

The Black Stars will be up for revenge against the Indomitable Lions, who ended their hopes of winning the 2017 tournament in the semi-finals. Guinea-Bissau and Benin are the other teams, making it an all West African group.
Kwesi Appiah’s men will be based in Ismailia and will begin their tournament against Benin on Monday, 25 June. They will then face Cameroon on 29 June before playing Guinea-Bissau four days later. Ghana have been crowned champions of Africa four times but haven’t lifted the trophy in 37 years.
Hosts nation Egypt will face Zimbabwe, DR Congo and Uganda in Group A while two-time champions Ivory Coast are in Group D alongside Morocco, South Africa and Namibia. Two of the three tournament debutants – Madagascar and Burundi – are in Group B with Nigeria and Guinea.
The other new team, Mauritania, are in Group E with Tunisia, Mali and Angola. Senegal and Algeria are alongside Kenya and Tanzania, who have only qualified once before – in 1980 – in Group C.
The first game of the tournament will be at the Cairo International Stadium between Egypt and on Friday, 21 June. The tournament takes place in six stadiums across Egypt between 21 June and 19 July.
This year’s tournament is the largest Africa Cup of Nations ever, with 24 teams. The top two from each group will go through to the last 16, while the best four third-placed teams also progress – meaning only eight teams are eliminated in the group stages. The Comoros Football Federation (FFC) has lodged a case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) over Cameroon’s participation at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
A post on social media from the general manager of the Comoros team, Ben Amir Saadi, confirmed the move. The Comoros believe that Cameroon should be excluded from the 2019 finals after having the hosting rights for the tournament withdrawn from them.
Comoros are in the same qualifying group as Cameroon, whom they face in March. The FFC claims that Caf has failed to implement its own regulations concerning the action to be taken.
Caf rules (Article 92.3) state that if a nation withdraws from hosting or has the rights taken away one year before the finals, ‘a fine of five hundred thousand (500,000) U.S. dollars and a suspension of the next edition of AFCON of it’s A national team, without considering the concerned edition.’
The latter words would suggest that Cameroon’s participation in the 2019 finals should not be affected.
However, it remains to be seen how the FFC’s claim will impact, if at all, upon Cameroon’s hosting of the 2021 Nations Cup, which it is now set to stage.
As things stand, the Nations Cup qualifier in March between Cameroon and the Comoros will decide who joins already-qualified Morocco in reaching the finals in Egypt, with the fourth team in Group B – Malawi – no long able to go through.
With Morocco on 10 points, Cameroon 8 and the Comoros 5, a draw in Cameroon will be enough for the Indomitable Lions to advance – while the Comoros must win to advance.
