Gunmen killed 3 in Central African Republic

At least three people have been killed and hundreds of others forced to flee their homes in the Central African Republic (CAR) over an attack by gunmen against a neighborhood in the country’s capital. The deadly incident occurred in the predominantly Muslim PK5 neighborhood of the capital, Bangui, on Monday when armed men with machine guns and heavy weapons raided the neighborhood.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but members of the anti-Balaka militia are suspected. According to witnesses, soldiers from the United Nations mission in the CAR engaged the assailants and were ultimately able to repel them. Reports said fighting had died down when night fell.

Earlier, on Sunday, fully armed members of ex-rebel group Seleka had abducted six police officers in the capital, according to Minister of the Interior Jean-Serge Bokassa. It was, however, not clear whether the Monday attack and the Sunday kidnappings were linked.

The CAR, one of the world’s poorest countries, has been hit by turmoil since 2013, when Christian armed groups launched coordinated attacks against the mostly-Muslim Seleka group, which itself had toppled the government in March that year.

France launches preliminary probe into the child abuse scandals in CAR

Prosecutors in France have launched a preliminary probe into allegations that French soldiers deployed to the Central African Republic (CAR) physically abused two civilians or stood by as others beat the duo up in the African country. Five troops are suspected of beating up the two locals or looking on while the men were physically abused by others at a military outpost in the capital city of Bangui in 2014. “The preliminary investigation will focus on searching for and identifying the victims,” an unnamed judicial source said Monday.

The probe will also seek to find out why the servicemen assaulted the civilians and why no one stopped the attack, which was first reported by the French daily Ouest-France. A senior officer reported the incident to his superiors in late April. Last week, French authorities opened an inquiry into “voluntary group violence” as well as sequestration and failing to help people in danger over the assault.

Earlier this month, the French Defense Ministry said it suspended the five troops accused of engaging in physical abuse following their deployment to the CAR. Four other troops were subject to disciplinary action due to their failure to report the attack despite allegedly having knowledge of it.

The French soldiers in the CAR, known as Sangaris, have engaged in controversial behavior against the locals before. There are currently three other official probes underway into allegations that French soldiers sexually abused children in the CAR. The Sangaris force was deployed to the CAR in 2013 after the outbreak of inter-communal violence that has killed thousands. The military mission is due to conclude at the end of the current year, after a progressive draw-down.

The United Nations announced in April that it has documented 108 new cases of sexual abuse committed by the French troops in the CAR mostly against minors, describing them as “sickening” and urging investigations that “leave no stone unturned.”

Moscow losing patience with US over Syria

Russia has warned the United States that Moscow’s patience is running thin over Washington’s refusal to target Takfiri militants fighting against the Syrian government. Last week, US Secretary of State John Kerry warned Russia that America’s patience on the issue of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s future was running out. Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook also said US military officials had “expressed strong concerns” about Russia’s airstrikes against US-backed militants, “which included forces that are participants in the cessation of hostilities in Syria.” Russia has denied the US claim.

Syria is currently observing a ceasefire brokered by Russia and the US, which entered into force on February 27. The truce, which was reached between the Syrian government and dozens of militant groups operating in the country, does not apply to the Daesh and al-Nusra Front terrorist groups. However, renewed violence in some parts of Syria, particularly around Aleppo, has left the ceasefire in tatters in recent weeks and torpedoed peace talks on the conflict.

Boko Haram kills 2 civilians, hundreds others pushed out of their homes in Nigeria

At least two civilians have been killed and hundreds others pushed out of their homes after Boko Haram terrorists stormed a village in northeastern Nigeria, local residents say. Local residents said on Monday that the attack occurred early on Saturday in Wumbi in the Kalabalge district of northern Borno state near the Cameroon border.

They said that the attack also forced hundreds of residents to cross into neighboring Cameroon. “Boko Haram gunmen attacked our village around 4:00 am (0300 GMT) and killed two people while everybody crossed the river into Cameroon,” a resident said, adding, “They came on 10 motorcycles and fired indiscriminately, which jolted people out of their sleep, before they began to set our houses on fire after looting our food stocks.” Sources say the details of the latest militant raid were slow to come out because of poor to non-existent telephone networks in the remote region.

Egypt Air: Examination of black boxes begins!!

Investigators have begun analysing the two severely damaged black boxes from EgyptAir flight MS804 as they seek to explain why the plane plunged into the sea, killing all 66 people on board. It would require “lots of time and effort” to fix the two badly damaged black box recorders, sources on Egypt’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Committee told Reuters on Sunday. The committee said it started the analysis of the devices, with representatives from France and the United States, which are crucial to explaining why the Airbus A320 crashed on May 19 en route from Paris to Cairo.

The memory units from both the Cockpit Voice Recorder and the Flight Data Recorder were extracted from the devices and dried in a military facility for eight hours, the committee said in a statement. Investigators are now conducting electrical tests on the memory units, the final step before trying to extract data. If intact, the cockpit recorder should reveal pilot conversations and any cockpit alarms, as well as other clues such as engine noise. But crash experts say it may provide only limited insight into the reason for the crash. With the data recorder, investigators have a greater chance of discovering the cause, provided its chip is still intact.

Investigators need to further analyse the memory units before deciding if they can be fixed locally or if they need to be sent abroad for repairs. Search teams retrieved the Cockpit Voice Recorder on Thursday which they said was damaged but had the memory unit intact. They found the Flight Data Recorder on Friday. While no explanation for the disaster has been ruled out, current and former aviation officials increasingly believe the root of the crash lies in the aircraft’s technical systems, rather than deliberate sabotage.

There has been a series of airplane accidents at high altitude blamed on a cocktail of technical and pilot flaws. The crash is the third blow since October to Egypt’s travel industry, which is still suffering from the 2011 uprising that ended Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule. A Russian plane crashed in the Sinai Peninsula in October, killing all 224 people on board in an attack claimed by Islamic State. In March, an EgyptAir plane was hijacked by a man wearing a fake suicide belt. No one was hurt.

Douala: 5 killed at Ndokoti

Five people have died following the collapse of a poorly constructed building in the Ndokoti Neighbourhood in Douala. The incident occurred on Saturday 18th June 2016 at 8am after a heavy down pour. After the collapse of the building, two lifeless bodies were discovered at 8am, one of them identified as Bassong Tchekam Alain Zacharie 41 year old man who was residing close to the construction site.

Later on in the afternoon, three others were found. But it is obvious that the death toll might increase onlookers indicate that tens of people were in the uncomplete building that had a drinking spot on its ground floor. The Littoral Governor Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua and some security officers visited the site of the incident where they noticed that the building was poorly constructed with low quality building material. While the remains were taken to the Logbaba Hospital Mortuary, the owner of the construction site is presently under Gendarmerie custody pending investigations.

President Buhari returns home after spending 13 days in a London hospital

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Muhammadu Buhari returned late on Sunday evening to Abuja from London where he spent 13 days for health reasons. Speaking to reporters, the former military dictator said “I’m fine. I’m in good shape. You can see me inspect the guards of honor. Now you can do the assessment yourself”.

The Nigerian leader was welcomed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, by governors and other government officials.

Biya’s Cameroon: Man killed for stealing a water storage container

A man, whose identity is unknown, was beaten to death during the night of June 18, 2016 for stealing a drum meant to store water in a residence at the Ekounou neighbourhood in Yaounde. The man, whom eyewitnesses say is a taxi driver, was caught directly by the owner of the drum, Stephan Lenga, who was returning home after an outing during the early hours of that fateful day.

The owner said on his way from a meeting at about 3:15 a.m, he saw a thief in front of his gate carrying away a drum and when he tried to ask him where the drum was from the thief started a fight. He immediately raised an alarm and his neighbours came to his rescue and beat the man to death. At about 7:15 a.m. a passerby said she knew the man as a regular customer of her “puff-puff and beans” fast food business and that he was a customer who usually complains of having financial problems. At about 8:30 a.m, a team from the Fire Fighters Brigade team came at the scene and carried the corpse away for identification.

Nigeria: Aso Rock confirms extension of President Buhari’s medical leave

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his four-day medical leave in London in the UK and will return to his country on Sunday, June 19 Buhari to resume service at Aso Rock palace on Monday, June 20. The announcement of the extension of the former coup leader was made on Thursday in Abuja by the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

In making the announcement, the current Nigerian Acting President reminded reporters at the presidency that Buhari had a 10-day medical leave which started on the 6^th of June for a “persistent ear infection.” And to reassure his compatriots about the state of Buhari, Professor Osinbajo said that “Mr. President is in good condition, he is doing very well, he is fine. He needs to have one or two days of rest”.

The Aso Rock announcement was prompted by rumors circulating in the country that Buhari was dying in a London hospital. The former military dictator has seen the cancellation of some programs on his agenda.
