The massive police presence at the Yaounde General Hospital early today Monday the 10^th of October 2016 was indication of an abnormality around the hospital. Patients with renal problems have begun a seat down strike in front of the Yaounde General Hospital.

The patients are decrying the fact that they have gone for months without haemodialysis treatment due to lack of machines. Only seven of the 20 machines of the haemodialysis centre are working for over 300 patients.

The room for the oxygenated water needed for dialysis is down as well. Most of the patients say they lack the means to carry out the specialised treatment in private or foreign hospitals.

The SDF Chairman has reportedly told the Rambler newspaper that Cameroon has good medical establishments just like Europe.  “I want to tell Cameroonians that good medical institutions still exist in Cameroon that can deliver. I did not apply for any money to be excavated by anybody. The quality of medical work done by Mission Hospitals can be compared to what happens in Europe. I trust the doctors.”

Ni John Fru Ndi who was speaking barely some few days after he was discharged from the Shisong Hospital in Bui Division, North West Region, said he felt proud to have received prompt medical attention from local but experienced doctors. Said the SDF Chairman “I am proud that what people pay flights to Europe to do for 15Million FCFA,I have done for 1million FCFA. I often do regular check-ups at Mbingo Baptist Hospital, Presbyterian Eye Department and others and I am satisfied.”

Asked on what had taken him to the hospital, NI John FRU NDI said, “I was sick; my doctor said I was sick and needed medical attention. It is not the illness that takes away souls. I am home and healthy now.” The Shisong Medical Center which was declared the best emergency centre in West and Central Africa is situated in Bui Division in the North West, but roads leading to the centre are in deplorable state, hence evacuating a patient for emergency cases is as good as digging his grave.

Doctors in Cameroon are donating blood at the Yaounde Central Hospital to help increase the amount of blood available in the blood banks. The four-day campaign which was launched today the 5^th of October 2016 is an initiative of the Association of Medical Doctors in Cameroon, MEDICAMER.

The Director General of the Yaounde Central Hospital, Prof Pierre Joseph Fouda observed that the doctors are sending out a message. The blood donation exercise comes at a time when statistics indicate that Cameroon needs more than 140,000 packets of blood every year.  The campaign is expected to spread to other towns and cities in the days ahead.

Andre Mama Fouda,the Minister of Public Health has reportedly brought the name of President Biya into the Rigobert Song health situation. Song Suffered a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) on October 2, 2016 in Yaoundé, and the former footballer was evacuated on October 4th in a medical plane to the Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris to continue his treatment.

Minister Mama Fouda who was flanked by Communication Minister Issa Tchiroma in a press briefing at the Yaounde Emergency Center (CURY) when the ambulance to transport Song from the Nsimalen airport arrived from Paris observed that, “Rigobert Song had a stroke and was taken to CURY. Physicians at CURY have done the right thing for him to continue his treatment in Paris at the Pitié Salpêtrière hospital, I would say thank you to the head of state President Paul Biya who gave instructions to the government to initiate all necessary steps for the Rigobert Song support to not only be very effective, but quick. “

Minister Mama Fouda added that “Rigobert Song is not out of danger yet, but he will continue treatment in France.” He spent all his time only praising the head of state for his personal involvement in the matter. Andre Mama Fouda in just one sentence did acknowledge the work of the medical staff at the emergency centre.

The production, marketing and consumption of whisky in sachets are persistently developing serious resistance to all administrative measures towards their complete ban. Following results of laboratory test which found that whisky in sachet and in plastic bottles is detrimental to human health, government, through the Minister in charge of industries, took the bold step banning its production and marketing on the national territory. The deadline for the substance to completely disappear was September 12, 2014. In effect, the disappearance of whisky in sachets was to give way to whisky that is produced in strict respect of standards set by the Ministry of Mines, Industries and Technological Development. Enough time was equally given with administrative sympathy for industries, wholesalers and retailers to exhaust the stock they had in their warehouses and stores.

But as faith would have it and as the D-day approached, more of the product flooded the market. Consumption persisted especially in the rural areas where it continues to serve as veritable lubricant for funeral ceremonies. The product which has been established as containing dangerous substances such as methanol is consumed mostly by youths and old people at village levels. The signs are usually there after a ceremony where emptied sachets are littered at random. Is it its massive consumption that is making it difficult to stop the market; is the question on many lips.

Or, is it because industries involved in its production continue to pay taxes to the government? However, whatever explanation can be given to justify the flourishing nature of the business; it is clear the administration wants it completely annihilated. But because of the famous administrative tolerance, the phenomenon continues to gain ground. The two-year period of grace setting the new date at September 12, 2016, has come and passed but whisky in sachet remains. Is this a slap on the face of the administration?

Does this translate some degree of administrative weakness? Or, is it a silent war dealer in this category of whisky is waging against government? Stakeholders once more met in Yaounde yesterday and came out with resolutions which are expected to be submitted to the Prime Minister for final decision. The outcome is seriously awaited as the health of the population remains in perpetual danger.
