Stumbling and Mumbling: The Trouble with the late President Ahidjo’s daughter

Debates are a lousy way of presenting facts. In Cameroon, debates are naturally polarizing with CPDM and SDF partisans always expected to advocate that all benefits lie on their side. This disguises what might be crucial facts, that either position has costs.

Reasonable people might believe any of the following: that the Paul Biya decree signed on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, appointing Aminatou Ahidjo, as chair of the Congress Hall in Yaoundé, with benefits in kind provided for by the regulations in force, stated in Article 2 of the presidential text was a good thing in our Cameroon political story.

Secondly, against the advice of her mother, Germaine Ahidjo in exile in Senegal, where the late President Ahmadou Ahidjo, the first Head of State of Cameroon was buried after his death in 1989, Aminatou Ahidjo decided upon her return to Cameroon to join against all odds in 2013 the ranks of the ruling CPDM, the political party of President Paul Biya, successor and nemesis of the Ahidjo family.

Cameroon: Chinese miners shipping gold and diamonds fraudulently out of the country

It has been revealed that Asian miners fraudulently evacuate undeclared mines from the East region in Cameroon. Cameroon government officials claimed recently that 70% of local mine production leave the country via the back door. Security sources say the Chinese ship the gold and diamonds using domestic gas cylinders.

Cameroon Intelligence Report learnt that security forces confiscated supposed empty gas bottles following intelligence from a Cameroonian national serving at the gold plants in Bertoua and found that some were heavier than others.  Huge amounts of gold hidden in plastic bags were discovered in some of the bottles.

Gold extraction companies and diamonds in the Eastern Region are predominantly Chinese. The Chinese are working in collusion with local CPDM officials who consent to the gold plunder scheme on Cameroonian soil. Unfortunately, not a single word or arrest have been made on the instigators of this horrible economic crime.

Our chief economic reporter noted that the CPDM government is maintaining a kind of deliberate silence on the issue in order not to strain diplomatic relations with China.  A highly placed government official who sued for anonymity told Cameroon Intelligence Report that there is virtually no record on diamonds extracted from sites in Boumba and Ngoko.

First ever European Queen of Bangante passed away at 73

Her Majesty Claude Bergeret Njike, affectionately called “Nteuh Shune”, the widow of the traditional ruler of Bangangté, the late François Pokam Njike has passed away aged 73. The first ever European Queen of the Bangante people died on Monday July 11 2016 after a brief illness.

She was born on June the 5th, 1943 in Douala, Littoral region to Protestant missionary parents and became queen after her marriage in 1978 to King Francois Njike Pokam of Bangangté.

Her husband died on the 7th of December 1987. Claude Bergeret Njike published several books on the Bamileke culture, including “My African passion (1997)” and “The wisdom of my village” (in 2000).

Bamenda traders on strike

Bamenda traders on strike

Traders of the Bamenda main market have staged a massive demonstration following a recent increment in store rents. The strike action held Tuesday the 12th of July 2016 in Bamenda the chief city in the North West region. The traders blocked the Bamenda main raod right to the governor’s office chanting slogans against city council officials.

Cameroon Intelligence Report was informed that the increment recently instituted is to enable the council generate money to pay sitting allowances for councilors. The CPDM Mezam SDO who approached the traders in a bid to stop the strike shied away as the crowd headed towards the governor’s office.

We contacted the Secretary General of the Bamenda urban council who revealed that the calculations were made according to square meters. However, the Bamenda city council has received heavy criticism of late. The leadership of Vincent Nji Ndumu has been a mess and a successful failure.A highly placed council official was heard murmuring privately that the city council has no impact on the lives of Bamenda city dwellers. The protesters carried messages such as “Ndumu must go” and Biyaexit.

Buea: Mayor Ekema Patrick takes on Barrister Tambe Tiku, says the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedom is badly in need of a decent leader

The Mayor of the Buea city council Hon. Ekema Patrick has reacted to human rights violation claims made by the South West Regional Secretary of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedom. The outspoken mayor said in a letter addressed to the commission that its leader, Barrister Tambe Tiku has discredited the commission’s reputation established by President Biya as an institution for consultation, dialogue and concerted action as enshrined in law number 2004/016 of 22nd July, 2004.

Mayor Ekema Patrick opined that Tambe Tiku has been regularly misusing his office to ventilate personal issues and have minimized administrative processes and lacks professionalism. The allegations made by the human rights commission according to the development oriented mayor were not properly tabled by the Regional secretary. Mayor Ekema observed that a phone call should not have been the medium to contact his office.

“The offensive, abusive and arrogant public authority manifested by Tambe Tiku simply represents the small mindedness and narrow vision with which he handles complaints”. Mayor Ekema added that the Regional Secretary Barrister Tambe Tiku has the culture of talking low on public officials including highly respected Fako traditional authorities. Cameroon Intelligence Report gathered that the Human Rights Commission is reportedly losing its credibility as it has unduly extended its function on the Bakweri Land matters which is completely out of focus.

The Buea mayor revealed that the South West region was badly in need of a decent man to run the secretariat of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedom. Tambe Tiku hinted Ekema Patrick is all over the place and has demonstrated a frightful and unloving attitude towards the respect and neutrality rule that binds ELECAM members. In an interview with Cameroon Intelligence Report which will be published later, the Mayor made it clear that Tambe Tiku should return to his native Manyu and practice party politics. Ekema Patrick also spoke of his commitment to implement every aspect of President Biya’s emergency program for Cameroon in 2035.

UK lawyers petition Prime Minister Cameron, says Brexit vote not binding

Over a thousand British lawyers have signed a letter addressed to Prime Minister David Cameron, saying that the June 23 vote to exit the European Union (EU) was not “legally binding” and needs a parliamentary vote to materialize. Last month, 52 percent of British voters opted to leave the union after 43 years of membership in the 28-nation bloc. The lawyers, however, argue that MPs should be allowed a free vote on the decision before London invokes the Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and enters a two-year timeline to exit the EU.

“There is evidence that the referendum result was influenced by misrepresentations of fact and promises that could not be delivered,” wrote Philip Kolvin, one of the letter’s main coordinators. “Since the result was only narrowly in favor of Brexit, it cannot be discounted that the misrepresentations and promises were a decisive or contributory factor in the result,” he added.

The vote to leave the EU caused turmoil in the UK’s main political parties and forced Cameron announce his resignation after failing to prevent the decision. In the build-up to the vote, Cameron and other “Remain” campaigners warned that leaving the union would harm the country’s security and economy. But “Leave” proponents such as former London mayor Boris Johnson argued that it is only outside the EU that the UK could regain control over its borders and bolster its economy.

In their letter, which will be delivered to Cameron this week, the lawyers have called on the premier to set up a Royal Commission tasked with weighing the benefits, costs and risks of a Brexit. Some of the MPs also echoed the lawyers’ view, with David Lemmy, the MP for Tottenham and former Higher Education and Skills Minister, saying the British Parliament makes “sovereign” decisions. “In our democracy parliament is sovereign – we do not have government by referenda or plebiscite,” he told British daily The Independent.

“Whoever replaces David Cameron Prime Minister will have to seek the approval of Parliament before any move is made to invoke Article 50 and trigger Brexit,” Lemmy added. According to a new survey by the Opinium, at least seven percent (1.2 million), of the anti-EU voters say they would vote for “Remain” if they get another chance, almost removing the Brexit’s margin. The research released late last month, also found that three percent of the “Remain” voters were unhappy with their choice.

Mbouda: Man shot dead by Police Commissioner for urinating on the street

A police commissioner serving in the city of Mbouda in the Bamboutos constituency in the West region has shot and killed a man for urinating on the street. Cameroon Intelligence Report gathered from local media sources that the commissioner, suspected of being under the influence of alcohol shot at close range, the young man trying to satisfy a natural need on the main Mbouda roundabout.

Relating the circumstances of the tragedy, community sources reported that there was a brief exchange between the officer and the young man called Joseph Talla.  The police commissioner asked the young man not to urinate on the street. The latter did not comply. The police commissioner shot him on the spot with his gun.  After the crime, the police officer in a typical CPDM pattern was ferried out of Mbouda to take refuge in Bafoussam, the regional capital of the West region.

Renewed fighting in South Sudan: UN calls for an end to violence

The United Nations Security Council has called on South Sudan’s neighbors to help end renewed fighting between government forces and former rebels in the country. In a closed-door meeting on Sunday, the council also demanded that both sides of the conflict “do their utmost to control their respective forces, urgently end the fighting and prevent the spread of violence, and genuinely commit themselves to the full and immediate implementation of the peace agreement,” reached in August 2015.

The 15-member council further asked for additional peacekeepers in the African country. Earlier, a UN mission spokeswoman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there were around 50 to 60 casualties in Sunday’s clashes in the capital Juba as former rebels and government soldiers exchanged fire in several parts of the capital. The violence forced thousands of people to flee the city.

This comes after more than 300 people, including many civilians and a Chinese peacekeeper, lost their lives during heavy gun battle in Juba on Thursday and Friday. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday he was “shocked and appalled” by the fighting between the Juba government troops and rebels, urging both sides to halt the violence.

Prime Minister Netanyahu fraud probe to go public

An Israeli official says the details of an investigation into allegations of large-scale money laundering by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be made public soon. The official, whose name was not mentioned in reports, said on Saturday that police believe that they have adequate evidence to make the probe public this week or early next week.

Some of the inquiry materials had originated in other, unrelated investigations, but they have now been linked to the money laundering case involving the Israeli prime minister. The police and the attorney general’s office think it is untenable to keep the investigation secret anymore due to its sensitivity, he said, adding that a decision was made to make an official announcement about the case.

Police have so far prevented leaks to the media concerning the probe, but there were reports of people being summoned for questioning by the police’s anti-fraud unit. Recently, Israeli media said the investigation against Netanyahu focuses on foreign funds he received after resuming office in 2009. The premier has dismissed the allegations.

Netanyahu is also implicated in a separate fraud case involving French tycoon Arnaud Mimran, who is said to have previously made unrelated donations to the Israeli premier. Earlier this week, a French court convicted Mimran of fraud and sentenced him to eight years in prison and one million euros in fines in a 2008-2009 fraud case. On Friday, Channel 10 reported that the latest police investigation into Netanyahu’s affairs involves suspicions of money laundering on a wide-scale.

The suspicion pertains to the alleged transfer of “large sums” to either Netanyahu or one of his family members and is not linked to campaign or political funding, it said.  The television said the investigation may require questioning abroad, but no investigators have yet been sent out of Israel.

Chantal Biya, the wife of the head of state who left the country before national day celebrations on the 20th of May has released images of herself in a European website run by some professional journalists. The photos came out some 70 days after she went missing from the scene.

Madam Chantal Biya came out in simple outfit, stripped of her usual body guards and posed just like an ordinary Cameroonian. She carried a baby in an undisclosed location in a European country. Unguarded and smiling, Chantal Biya, gave the impression of being more free and safe on the streets of a European country than in Yaounde.
