Cameroun progresses in new FIFA ranking
African Cup of Nations 2017 champions, Cameroun have climbed 29 spots on the latest FIFA ranking which has also seen the AFCON final four progressed. According to the February FIFA world ranking released on Thursday February 9, 2017, the Indomitable Lions are the 3rd highest ranked African team and 33rd in the world.
The team that was widely seen as the underdogs of the 2017 AFCON tournament lifted the trophy after beating the Pharaohs of Egypt 2-1 at the finals in Libreville Gabon last Sunday. Despite AFCON loss, the competition’s runners-up, Egypt has been ranked first in Africa—moving from the 37th to the 25th in the world.
Senegal that topped the continent on the classification last month has dropped to the second position and 31st in the world. Cameroun’s World Cup qualifying group opponents, Nigeria are ranked 7th in Africa and 41st in the world. Meanwhile, there was no change at the top five soccer powers in the world as Lionel Messi’s Argentina maintained lead with Brazil, Germany, Chile and Belgium respectively.
