Cameroon Africa Cup of Nations of shame
22 months before the start of the 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, local media reports have sounded a note of caution that Cameroon is certainly not ready to host even 4 football delegations. The city of Bafoussam in the West region is among the six locations earmarked by the regime in Yaoundé for the 2019 tournament.
Frankly speaking, the very poor state of the roads and sanitation facilities in the capital of the Western Region seems to give reason to CAF President Ahmad, who recently doubted La Republique’s capacity to organize the next Africa Cup of Nations.
A sister publication, Cameroon Info.Net has reported that it is no longer possible to drive on the main and secondary roads to and from Bafoussam without falling into uncountable potholes every kilometer. More serious, the road linking the main city to the Kouekong Sports Stadium, newly built for the 2019 competition is not yet under construction.
The city of Bafoussam was selected ever since five years ago as a venue to host some of the matches of the 2019 AFCON. It was widely believed that road network in Bafoussam would be rehabilitated. However, the situation has gone from bad to worse.
The government delegate to the Bafoussam City Council, Emmanuel Nzete, has come under attack numerous times for the disastrous state of roads in his city. But the story is also true even in Yaoundé, the nation’s capital.
