Biya regime’s crackdown on the Consortium: Barrister Bobga escapes to US, Anxiety over Wilfred Tassang’s whereabouts
In the wake of the massive arrest of Anglophone Teachers Trade Unionists, Common Law Lawyers and Civil Society Activists including Dr Fontem Neba, Barrister Agbor Balla, Mancho Bibixy, Lord Justice Ayah Paul and Godden Zama, many were worried over the whereabouts of the President of the North West Lawyers Association, NOWELA, Barrister Bobga Harmony Mbuton.
Some media reports had suggested that he had been picked up by the secret service, taken to an unknown destination and killed. However, Barrister Bobga seems to have played a fast one on the vicious regime and appeared on Friday in Washington DC, USA during a Southern Cameroons protest march.
The arrest of Barrister Bobga was eminent after several members of the Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium were apprehended on Tuesday January 17, 2017. His narrow escape to the US according to observers remains a mystery. Nothing has been heard of the Executive Secretary of the Cameroon Teachers Trade Union, CATTU, Wilfred Tassang. Unconfirmed sources say he is at the US embassy in Yaoundé.
The President of University of Buea Chapter of Higher Education Trade Union, SYNES UB, Prof. James Arrey Abangma has broken the silence he maintained ever since the Francophone government crackdown on the Consortium. He told The Sun Newspaper that he is at his home and that anybody who wants to see him should come around. The adviser to the Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium told reporters that security agents from La Republique came to look for someone not him.
