UK: Prime Minister Boris Brexit deal loses as Brits demand vote
Yet more drama in London’s capital on Saturday, as the British PM tried and failed to get his Brexit deal through the House of Commons.
MPs voted on an amendment which delays a meaningful vote on Boris Johnson’s EU withdrawal deal which passed by 322 votes to 306. Mr Johnson responded with defiance.
This latest loss means the Prime Minister cannot secure parliamentary approval for his deal by the end of October and is required by the terms of the so-called Benn Act to ask Brussels for an extension.
As British lawmakers argued inside, hundreds of thousands of pro-EU supporters brought Westminster to a complete standstill, suggesting that the Prime Minister has failed to convince many Brits to support his deal as well.
Yet after all this time of negotiations, debates and votes the UK is still a very long way off from resolving this political crisis.
