The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy for Africa has condemned the recent attacks on Bangourain, Noun Division of the West region that saw at least one person dead, several others abducted and houses and property destroyed.

Felix Agbor Nkongho, the Director of the Centre said they were stunned by the events but called on both Anglophones and Francophones to exercise restraint after reports of a possible retaliation.

« Because of these (events), the CHRDA alerts the government of an impending hate crime, retaliatory ethnic conflict, indoctrination and violent extremism as a result of cross regional attacks from armed separatist groups and villagers of affected communities, » the CHRDA said.

The Centre called for an end to all hate rhetoric that have popped up in the wake of Sunday’s attack and later retaliation on December 26 that led to at least two persons dead according to various sources.

« Cameroonians are called upon to exhibit togetherness and condemn these happenings as a nation, regardless of their ethnic, religious, political, ideological, cultural or economic denominations, »the CHRDA pleaded.

The CHRDA also called on the government to open an investigation into the happenings and « seek justice where necessary, reparation and reconciliation of parties to the conflicts. »
