US Senator Bernie Sanders has described President Donald Trump as a “pathological liar” and an “embarrassment” at a rally in South Carolina.

The 77-year-old Vermont independent made the remarks on Saturday the same day when he set out on an aggressive nine-state campaign to gain votes for Democrat candidates in the upcoming midterm congressional elections.

“There is no politician in history who doesn’t stretch the truth in order to make his or her point, that’s politics but we’ve never had a president who lies all the time and it’s quite possible he doesn’t even know the difference between a truth and a lie,” Sanders said.

He also said that Trump had set a “terrible example” for the American children as he is an indecent and a dishonest president.

“I’ve got four kids, 7 grandchildren, we try to raise our kids to be honest and treat other people with respect and compassion and what kind of terrible example, regardless of your political views, whether you are conservative or progressive you want your kids to be honest and decent,” Sanders said.

“What kind of terrible example is this person in the White House giving to our children?” the senator added in reference to Trump.

His visit to South Carolina came after potential Democratic presidential contenders, including California Sen. Kamala Harris (D) and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker (D), visited the state ahead of its Democratic primary in 2020.

Although Sanders has not said whether he has intentions for another presidential bid in 2020, he has visited a number of states in recent months leading up to midterm elections in November to rally support for congressional candidates.

US midterm congressional elections, which take place at the halfway point of the presidential term, usually show low turnout due to a lack of enthusiasm. However, this year’s midterm congressional election is seen to be particularly important due to its link  to the continuation of Donald Trump’s presidency.

The upcoming elections will determine the presidency’s survival, according to political pundits and Trump, himself.

Sanders is also slated to campaign for J.D. Scholten, who is running against Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa).
