The governor of the state of Washington Jay Inslee confronts US President Donald Trump at the White House over his proposal to arm teachers in order to prevent future mass shootings telling Trump that “we need a little less tweeting here and a little more listening” on the subject of arming schools.

Inslee stood and objected to Trump’s controversial idea during a meeting with the nation’s governors at the White House, telling Trump that law enforcement agencies and instructors are both alarmed by the idea.

“I just think this is a circumstance where we need to listen that educators should educate and they should not be foisted upon this responsibility of packing heat,” said the Democratic governor.

“We need a little less tweeting here and a little more listening, and let’s just take that off the table and move forward,” added Inslee.

Trump pushed back at first, saying his proposal would only arm a percentage of teachers, but not all, to which Inslee responded that he had heard from teachers who do not want to carry firearms. He then just stood with his arms folded but did not directly respond to the Washington governor’s comment.

“Whatever percentage it is, speaking as a grandfather, speaking as a governor of the state of Washington, I have listened to the people who would be affected by that. I have listened to the biology teachers and they don’t want to do that,” he said. “I have listened to the first-grade teachers who don’t want to be pistol-packing first-grade teachers. I have listened to law enforcement who have said they don’t want to have to train teachers as law enforcement agencies, which takes about six months.”

The confrontation came during an hour-long appearance by Trump, during which he spoke about issues ranging from immigration and North Korea to trade and the economy.

But the central focus of the meeting was the nation’s gun laws, which have come under increasing scrutiny following this month’s deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 people.

In the backdrop of last week’s deadly school shooting in Florida, Trump suggested that arming teachers “would solve the problem instantly.”

At the gathering, Trump claimed he would have run into the Florida high school to prevent the gunman from carrying out the mass shooting.

“You don’t know until you test it, but I really believe I’d run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon,” he claimed. “And I think most of the people in this room would have done that, too.”

The president was doubling down on his criticism of an armed sheriff’s deputy who did not confront the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and instead took cover outside the school building, where 17 people were killed earlier this month.

“They weren’t exactly Medal of Honor winners, alright?” Trump said. “The way they performed was frankly disgusting.”

Trump also told the governors he ate lunch last weekend with leaders of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

“Don’t worry about the NRA,” he said. ”They’re on our side.”
